3" drain pipe across floor joists

02/06/2005 06:57 AM witeagle

We are remodeling our master bath on the 2nd floor. The remodel will move the toilet to the opposite side of the bath room. There is an existing 3 inch drain that runs up a wall from the basement, the in-between two floor joists between the first floor and the bathroom floor over to the existing toilet. In order to move the toilet, I need to tap into the existing drain and run it across 5 floor joists, making a 3.5 inch hole through each joist. We have 12 inch engineered floor joists. Do I need to put in any type of reinforcement in the floor joist?

Thanks

Justin

Laminated Beams

If you are referring to the laminated I beams, then the manufacturers instructions control and there is some difference. You should be able to read their printed name on the beams and go to their site. Generally, we can make holes except within a foot of an end or an inch or two from the I of the beam. Check your manufacturer. I'm guessing.

Laminated Beams

Thank you for the help. I was able to find the manufacutre's web site. There is an install manual I was able to download and it did in fact have the whole specifications on it. 12 inches from the supporting beam is the minimum for a 4 inch hole.

Thanks again, your info was very helpful.
