I am finishing a basement and have just wired three sets of 3-way dimmer switches.Each set of two controls an area.While I can turn the lights on and off at each location the dimmer does not work properly. The lights dim erratically,not in a gradual manner.Any thoughts or suggestions?

Are you sure that you can use more than one dimmer in the circuit?

Most 3-way dimmers I have seen are just dimmers that can work in a 3-way circuit; the other locations must have normal on-off switches (3-way ones).

With "standard" dimmers you only want to use dimmer on one end and a 3 way switch on the other. No way to "undim" from the other end.

There are what is called Smart Dimmers. They run about $50 for a starter set of a master and one slave. With those you have full controll from either place.

What kind of lights are these.

Most flourscents or CFL don't work right if they are dimmed.

And there are also problem if the light include a transformer or power supply for a low voltage light.

Wow,I had no idea that you are supposed to use a single pole switch at the other end.I've only installed the Lutron Smart switches as you mentioned and they came in a package together.Thanks for your help.

So I re-read the suggestions and see that I shouldn't use a single pole switch.But I can use a 3-way but can't dim from that location.
