Above ground pool liner replacement - need advice please

09/17/2001 09:01 PM rhillinaugustaga

I've discovered, over the past two weeks, that our 12'x24' oval Doughboy with expandable bottom (shallow 3' with a 5' concave
deep end) is losing H2O. Last night, it lost about 9/16" (approximately 100 gal). And over the past week and a half or so, the level
has decreased approximately 3".

At the present, it is difficult to attempt to locate leak, as the water is tinted green from either from copper or mild algae. And area
estimates for leak detection are in the $200 range (about 1/2 the cost of a new liner). And I can't very well see continuing to fill
the pool to try and chemically balance to turn clear to look for a leak; water waste and possible under ground errosion.

So we decided to drain, and replace liner. The bottom half of the pool all the way around is surrounded with hard-packed clay /
dirt, with a deck surrounding. I've managed to crawl under deck around pool and found NO soft or moist areas. All the fittings are
water / moisture free from the outside paneling.

What special considerations should be taken during drain period, immediately after and while installing new liner. Installation costs
average about $900 without tax, plus the $400 liner. Is there anyone out there who has replaced liner as a lay-homeowner? Or
would it be advisable to shell out the $900 for installation? (About $1500 total).

Any advice and experience you can contribute is appreciated. Please email to rhillinaugustaga@netscape.net

Thank you in advance.
