Adjusting a spring loaded door hinge

12/03/2007 12:35 PM smbodnar

Hello Everyone,

The door from our kitchen to the garage is a heavy, fire resistant door. It has the spring loaded hinges to make it close all the way after opening. Recently, the door is not closing all the way and I want to adjust these hinges, but am not sure how. I know the top of the hinge uses an allen wrench, but I cant seem to increase the tension. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the door now hitting/scraping anywhere on the frame?

Is the door closing as fast as it used to or does it seem to be about half speed?

Perhaps one of the springs in the spring loaded hinges has snapped and you have less tension.

If you have three hinges it will be easy to remove one at a time and check to see if it is broken.

If you only have two you may need to prop the door so you dont rip the the other hinge out of the frame causing a minor disaster.

The door is not scraping anywhere, and closes alot slower than it used to. Can you adjust the springs or do I have to buy new ones?
