After 2 years I just removed my GutterFilter

09/17/2005 03:45 PM MarcHunt

I've had GutterFilter for two years; every time there has been a heavy summer downpour water cascades over the edge of the gutter. I have 5" J gutters with double the usual number of hidden hangers on a ranch-type (shallow slope roof) house. Along a 60 foot expanse there are two 2X3 leaders. Even with a 2 foot roof overhang, I had water pouring into my cellar through the window well. I had to give up on this approach, since water damage in my cellar is what gutters are supposed to avoid. Before installing GutterFilter, even with somewhat covered mesh gutter guards, I never had a flood in 38 years.

When I removed the foam material I saw that it has held up and that leaves and debris build-up weren't a problem. The downspouts were totally clean. My conclusion is that the fact that GutterFilter takes up so much of the gutter's interior volume makes the effective size of the gutter MUCH, MUCH smaller. In order to take advantage of GutterFilter you must first remove your normal, standard 5" gutters and install OVERSIZE ones (a hidden cost that GutterFilter never mentions). Note that their literature claims that they can handle 24 times the normal rainfall. In a summer downpour in the Northeast there can be 1” falling in 10 minutes, or 6”/hour – easily within the capability of normal 5” gutters. For GutterFilter to have failed at this low rate means that their claim seems to be unjustified. I’m asking for a refund.

Your Gutters

Marc,

If you had a problem with over-flow after installing GutterFilter, it's a sure bet they were installed incorrectly. The filter may be installed UNDER gutter spikes when they are high (above 3") in the gutter, but for all hanger-type, interior fasteners, the filter must be installed OVER the fasteners. Otherwise, the filter will be compressed aganst the bottom of the gutter and would indeed restrict water flow. Also, I found the over-the-top installation method to be considerably faster and easier.

I would contact your installer or the manufacturer if you require any assistance.

I have had the product installed since 2003 and have had zero problems (after 15 previous years of constant gutter cleaning).

GutterFilter and Hidden Hangers

01/06/2007 10:54 AM MarcHunt

The 1st photo on GutterFilter's web site shows the foam material under the hidden hangers. I had asked them about installing with HH's before I installed the foam: they said UNDER.
My roof is rectangular with the 5" gutter parallel to the 6" and draining the same area. The material was only slightly compressed under the HH's. Both gutters had the same style installation; the 6" had wider foam to fit.
The 6" installation works as advertised -- because there is enough volume. The 5" overflowed and there was no debris build-up on it.
I am happy your installation works so well for you.
The manufacturer did not stand behind their product when I wrote to them; I didn't even get a reply.

I have had GutterFilter less than two years and am currently looking for somethng to replace them with. Twice GutterFilter has clogged completely. See photo. In their ads they say debris drys out and blows away from the top of GutterFilter. Want to place a bet. This stuff has been there for two months rendering GutterFilter useless. Their 20 year no clog guarantee does not cover anything they consider over laying GutterFilter. GutterFilter does a great job of keeping stuff out of your gutters including WATER. The problem is even when clean, water slows as it hits the GutterFilter. The rest just rides over the top and over the top of the gutter. Like running water over a sponge. The first bid is absorbed then the rest just runs off.

GutterFilter has worked wonderfully at my home for 3 years.
Pine needles, maple seeds and leaves no longer get in my gutters and therefore NO MORE CLEANING!
GutterFilter does what it claims.
