My last house I was in I had to build 3 corner shelves above my 51" wide screen TV for my components. The current house I'm in has aluminum studs in the basement. I've been told that if I put shelves in the corner that the metal studs will not have the strength to hold a VCR, DVD etc. I need 3 shelves spaces out the height of a VCR tape. In the past I used MDF board screwed into 1x2 I believe, that were screwed into the wall studs. Then I doweled the front using a 1x2 to stop any warpage then I finished the front with a nice wooden trim piece.
The only way I see this working is by removing the drywall and supporting the metal studs with 2x4 studs.
Is there a better way to do this? No one out there sells deep enough shelves for VCR's etc. Instead of using the heavy MDF wood I'd like to try plexy glass. Thx in advance.
