AMana washer was making clicking noise so I replaced the pulley and helix. This worked great, until spin cycle which now throws water over basket inside machine only to leak on floor. Pulley seems to engage and disengage brake. when not in use, basket spins in counter clockwise direction but locks up in clockwise (i assume this is the brake engaging. Cant figure out why water is spewing over the top in spin cycle. Help!

Amana has marketed numerous different washer designs over the years. The only way we can find out which one you're dealing with is if you post its model and MFG (manufacturing) or B/M (bill of materials) numbers.

Did you replace its belt by any chance?

Most newer Amana washers use a special belt designed to slip at the start of the spin cycle to give the pump a chance to drain the machine before bringing the tub up to speed. The belt acts as a clutch. If it started to spin too fast before most of the water had drained from the tub, your symptom (whirlpooling) could result.

If an incorrect belt was installed, the tub could start to spin too soon resulting in whirlpooling up and over the tubs. That might also happen if the original belt had just worn down to bare rubber or it was adjusted too tightly.

Whirlpooling might also occur if the washer just wasn't draining the water from the tub fast enough.

I did replace the belt with a common 30" lawn mower belt I will try and find the Goodyear belt that was on it and try that, thanks for the tip. The belt I put on was easily purchased at an auto parts store.

That's a bad area to try to save a couple of bucks. Using that belt could have eventually damaged the washer's motor from putting too much strain on it.

What you should do is take the washer's complete identification information to an Amana/Maytag *appliance parts supplier* and get the factory recommended replacement part. It does not matter whom made the belt just that is was designed to the appliance manufacturer's specifications.

Do the job once and do it right!

Went by and picked up the correct belt and that fixed it perfectly. The lawn belt was more of a "time saver" gone awry than a cheaper way. Not to mention keeping the wife happy. Thanks for all your help, I never would have thought the belt would be causing such a weird problem.
