Attaching baseboard to metal studs

12/13/2001 08:06 AM mercabin

I've removes the cove molding and glue from my condo walls. I've finished patching & painting the area & would now like to install a smaller baseboard using screws (NO ADHESIVES!) I purchased trim screws with the small square drive that is used for installing baseboard to metal studs but I'm not sure how to use them Also, the box didn't say self tapping. Do I need to pre drill the holes & counter sink? What type of drill bit do I use to do this? What kind of problems can I expect?

Thanks,
Mike

Dear Mike,
First, countersink the holes in the baseboard, use a smaller bit by 1/2 the size of the screw to drill a pilot hole. Make sure the molding is in place before you drill the pilot hole. Attach the molding, fill the holes with Bondo, sand and paint.

You don't need to drill a pilot hole but it acually makes the job go faster and is much neater. I had two drills when I did mine. One drill was for the pilot hole, the other to drive the screw.

The head of the screw is small enough (you did get the trim head screws?) that you don't need to countersink.

If you are going to paint then I'd use spackle or putty. Don't forget the primer.

If you are going to stain them, do the staining first. Then get colored putty to fill the holes. You can mix different colors to match your stain. I did that and one has to look really hard to see where the screws are located.
