Barn board- need help!

My kitchen is covered in real barn board,walls&cabinets. It is very dark and very rough. How can I make them lighter? Varnish, stain, paint, glaze?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

A glaze may work but it is hard to make natural wood lighter.
