In the process of remodeling basement and part of the project includes replacing carpet on stairway. Since stairs are off garage as well as kitchen, the stairway carpet takes excessive abuse. I am looking for options to cover the stairs with some form of wood or wood laminate. Ideally, I would like to avoid carpet as well as linoleum.

I have no grand interest in actually replacing the stairs, rather I am researching options that would give the stairs a hardwood-look or finish. What options do I have? Has anyone done this before? What products are out there?
