Bats

01/09/2002 02:31 AM txspitfire76

My husband and I are about to begin renovating my grandmothers old home. It has been vacant for about 18 years, and with holes in the roof, and most of the windows knocked out, bats have taken up residence. Please tell me how, and if I can get rid of them before we start renovating. I really don't want to work with them there. Thank you.

Bats

Dear Spitfire,
First lose any knowledge of the old wives tales about bats. Close off all openings in their nesting area during full daylight, leaving one opening for escape. Set up a watch around dusk. You'll see them leave to feed. Once the last bat has gone, close off the opening. They'll find a new place to roost. Remember, some bats are a carrier of rabies. Most are harmless and very beneficial to us as they consume insects. If in doubt, check with your local animal control authority for other options.
Len
P.S. First watch where they exit at night and leave that open. Close all the rest.
