VERY weird situation...my attic is located directly above my dining room. Since I moved in 14 years ago there has been a large crack that runs from one end of the dining room ceiling to the other. Recently, I've noticed a sticky spot in the same place on the carpet every few days. I finally looked up and noticed what looks to be honey coming out of one small area of that crack in the ceiling. I looked around in the attic and didn't find anything. I'm assuming there is a nest between the ceiling of my dining room and the attic floor? Does this seem possible? If so, what should I do?? Thanks!

MARICHA - hi, if you've verified that what you're seeing drip is honey, then you've got a fairly large bees' nest in between the attic floor and dining room ceiling. You'll want to get an exterminator out there pronto! Another help might be if you can locate a bee keeper who would want to move the queen and the swarm to one of his nesting boxes. Either way, though, it sounds like this could get a bit messy. To get the queen out, either some flooring or some ceiling will probably have to come out.

I know it's possible for this to happen. I had hornets start to nest in the space between the first and second floors in an old farm house I was renting. They got in around the air gap for a drain pipe from the second floor bathroom. I think the only thing that saved us from major problems was the bathroom had been added over an existing 1st floor roof. There weren't any gaps for them to get into the house/bathroom area. I tried spraying hornet killer into the area several nights in a row and came close to getting stung. I finally took expanding foam and sealed the air gap around the pipe. The hornets inside couldn't get out and the nest died off.
