** I removed the flame spreader again, and turned the oven back on....nothing **
What exactly do you mean by "nothing"? Just no flame or no glow ignitor either??
If the ignitor IS glowing, is there also a gas smell when the oven is turned on?
** should I attempt to light the burner assembly with a match/lighter? **
No.
** SHOULD I TRY TO USE A METAL BRUSH? **
I wouldn't do anything further to the burner until you can provide a more detailed symptom description.
** I wonder what tool I need to check the amperage coming from the glow bar **
An ameter or amp probe. Not a tool found in most homeowner's tool kit.
** can I use my hand vacuum to clean up all the debris around the burner **
Vacuuming around the oven burner shouldn't hurt anything... providing it isn't hot at the time.
