Bonus for great contractor

05/25/2005 05:11 PM mgoldbaum

WE are building a small house in upstate NY and have a wonderful contractor/builder. We are working with a limited budget but no time restrictions and our builder has been a joy. We would like to show our appreciation but have limited resources. Is there a standard bonus for this situation? Thanks for any input.

what we did

We were also lucky enough to have a great contractor... and we were on a limited budget. Our contractor and crew were drinkers so we would ocassionally role in on a Friday with 12 packs for each crew member and a bottle of Dewers for the GC. He finished the house having done an exceptional job. We made a little plaque with his name and the year and month of so-called "completion." We had him to dinner for a gourmet meal and plenty of drinks. He seemed happy enough. Ask a contractor and not a home owner and they will probably tell you $1000 cash is a good bonus. Good luck.

...contractor bonus...

I kind of like what ape54321 did.

Typically I don't recognize the contractor (or entrepreneur) monetarily, but I definitely will offer workers something. I have been known to tip with money, alcohol, etc.

My experience is that it does NOT have to be a huge amount to be received graciously. As most of us know, even a well placed "THANK YOU" can go a long way!

A Gift certificate from a local tool store. Even if it just **********. The people will remember you every time they use the tool. The one night out fancy booze and food may be remember for a few weeks but that tool will be with them for a long time.

Besides the Gift certificate do a BQ in your back yard

contractor bonuses

While I was a small custom builder and a homeowner offered me a bonus(wheter cash or other)I always asked that they would do it for the crew instead of me.Even if its just a bucket of chicken for them at lunch one day.It is always a good booster near the begining of the job(i.e.,getting all the walls stood, etc)and you will be surprised how many times the guys would do things for the homeowner directly for free(on their own time of course)because of the good relationship they established early on.
