I would suggest a Craftsman 14.4 Pro cordless drill. Best tool I currently own. I have drilled a 5/8" hole through 6" of my 30 year old foundation on one battery, not fully charged when I started. Have used it with 1-1/2" hole saw many times and it had lots of torque, through the double top plate of a old wall. I have also drilled 1½" holes in Stainless steel counter tops.. I just wish S**** had a cordless 14.4 circular saw in the Pro line. The pro saw is an 18 volt and runs $200 just a little too much for how often I would use it.

i live up in canada and i buy most of my tools from canadian tire.. most of there tools are excellent.. i've had a mastercraft 9.6v cordless drill for about 6 years now and it's still running as good as the day i bought it..it came with charger, 2 batteries and some drill bits for $99.99...For all you Americans that live close to a Canadian border, you should check out some stores over here...Especially with the money exchange rate you will get a real bargain!!!

if you're looking for a good all around drill I would recommend the RYOBI 18v drill kit $99 ...otherwise if you want something a little bit heavier duty i would recommend the makita 12v m-force drill kit around $169...the makita 12v surprisingly has nearly equal torque as the ryobi but the makita has a ratcheting keyless chuck which gets a better grip ont he drill bit...plus it is better balanced than the ryobi...if you're looking for a handymans tool go ryobi...or if you want more of a contractor grade tool look at the makita

also for the person who asked if the dewalt and b&d batteries are interchangeable the ansower is not even close

Consumer reports has a good article on cordless drills and what they believe and why to be the best buy. Might surprise you on brand and price.

I see no one mentioned porter cable. I have the 14.4 model and found the batteries last a long time, the drill has plenty of power, I actually broke a 1" spade bit with it, they charge up in under an hour, and its well balanced in the hand. Came with a case, 2 batteries and a smart charger. The chuck is real easy to open and close and holds well. I drilled through a 6x6 with a 3/4" twist bit in under a minute with it on high, drilled 4 holes, not 1. I also have a slew of their other tools and have not had one of them let me down yet.
