Caloric Ultramatic Built-In Gas Oven

04/16/2007 04:03 PM MattSarah

We bought our house about a year ago and it already had a Caloric Ultramatic built-in gas oven. The owner said it mostly works fine, though sometimes the temp is a little off (which I always double-check with an oven thermometer; usually not a big deal.) The kitchen was re-modeled in the 1960s, so we're assuming the oven to be at least that old. I can't find a serial number on it anywhere.
A couple days ago, I went to turn it on and nothing happened. I didn't hear or smell gas, and there was not any extra warmth from the pilot light as there usually is (the pilot light is normally always lit, not ignited by a spark). We tried re-lighting the pilot light, to no avail.
Now we want to know if it's a simple problem to fix oursleves, can it be fixed by a repair man, or will we have to buy a new oven? Neither of us grew up with gas appliances, so know very little about them at all. Any help would be appreciated.
(I hate to pay for a repair man to come out if (A. we can fix it ourselves, or (B. he can't do anything and we have to buy a new one anyway!)
