Can I use gas logs as a primary heat source? |

I recently purchased a chalet with electric heat and I am interested in using propane as my primary heat source. Throughout my research, I have been hearing differing opinions about whether or not I can use gas logs in my wood-burning fireplace as a primary heat source. Currently, I have a wood-burning fireplace with an air inlet to let outside air into the combustion area. Is it possible to use gas logs as a primary heat source, even when I am not home? If so, should I use vented or unvented logs? If you recommend unvented, should the flue be open or closed? Thank you very much, David Berry |

We have gas logs in Florida and can barely heat one medium sized room....they are more for decoration as far as we are concerned. |

We have a gas log fireplace in our house (northern Oregon)and find that it works almost too well. We installed it as an alternative to the gas heating system when the power (hopefully not the gas) goes out. This fireplace will heat our entire home, although the living room where it's located may become too hot to live in. This thing works! Roger |

Roger, Are your gas logs vented or unvented? If they are unvented, do you leave the flue open or is it completely closed? What size is the gas log set you are using? Natural gas or propane? If the log set is unvented, do you have problems with condensation? Do you leave the glass doors on your fireplace open or closed? Does your fireplace have an intake for outside air or is it burning the air from inside your home? Does your fireplace have a blower? Thank you! |
