Casement or sliding windows?

10/07/2007 05:32 PM jwarfiel

What are the pros and cons of casement windows versus sliding windows in new home construction?

I'm building a home in Boquete, Panama. Temperatures are 70 to 80 degrees year round.

My plans call for casement windows. The builder has asked whether I want casement windows or whether I want to switch to their standard, sliding windows. As I understand it, both are aluminum.

My inspector tells me casement windows are better: for preventing break-ins and for low maintenance. He says the sliding windows have vinyl rollers that wear out in a year or two and have to be replaced.

One of my concerns is that the house has stone planters under many of the windows, some within six inches or a foot of the bottom of the window.

Which type of window is better for my situation and why?

Thanks for your help.
