Cat 5 question

10/18/2003 10:39 AM jbg

I'm trying to run networked DSL up to a bedroom. My house is Cat5 homerun wired. I plug the cat 5 from the router into the RJ45 jack in the home office and I check the signal at the homerun box in the basement and I have a signal. I then use a connector to attach the home office feed to the bedroom Cat5 feed (unplugged from the phone service module). However, when I then plug into the RJ45 jack in the bedroom there is no signal. I know the jack works because I have used it for phone service. I also checked the pin connections at the jack and they seem fine. Does the signal degrade over a long run or any other Ideas?

Thanks

As far as your question about distance - Cat5e will handle distances far greater than anything you will encounter in residential construction. Also, you said where you attempted to plug rj45 into and you get no signal, there was a phone plugged into that same jack previously? Phone jacks and network jacks can be the same size, but will only serve one pourpose 99% of the time. Do you have a better description of the current setup? Thanks~

Cat 5 question

Thanks Adam. The phone jacks in my house are wired with RJ45 jacks and Cat5 wire. You can plug the other end of the Cat5 into the jacks wired for phone service at the home run box. Your supposed to be able to use the jacks in the rooms as Network jacks by unplugging the other end at the home run from the phone service and plugging it into an ethernet switch. Any help is much appreciated.
