Clogged Shower Drain & Hard Water Problems

04/29/2000 12:19 PM seahawk76

Hello,

I am having a problem with my shower drain. It slowly drains water after I take a shower, so I assumed that I must have some type of stoppage somewhere. I have used chemical products (Extra Strength Draino, etc.), but the drain is still clogged up. Are there any other alternatives besides taking the trap off? I want the quickest and easiest solution that doesn't require a professional plumber's assistance.

Also, I am having a problem with hard water. I am getting an orange buildup in the shower, on the shower head, and the shower curtain. Does anyone have any recommendations for getting rid or at least cutting down on hard water? Would a new shower head help?

Thanks everyone!

Clogged Shower Drain & Hard Water Problems

Are your drain lines plastic or galvanized or cast iron? Galvanized and cast iron tend to build up over years of usage and the flow can be severely restricted. Have you tried rodding your drain? As far as the hard water goes, it sounds like you need a softener to remove a high iron content. You can take a sample in and get it tested by your local Culligan Man. A new shower head won't help.
