I had learned that technique you do on top of the legs, another thing I learned was on each side while the legs are together to make carpenter triangles using different color pencils. You could use while on the front, red for the back, dark blue for the left side and light blue for the right side. This way at a glance you can see what side your a working on and which end is the top of the leg. Just something I thought I would pass along.
