Unfortunately I have a painted concrete floor that is chipping away due to years of salt dripping from cars. I would like to resurface the floor and I understand that to get good adhesion I must remove the paint. Is there some type of machine available to shave a layer of concrete off so that the paint will be gone and the floor will be smoother at the same time ? Also is there something available that would at the very least easily remove the paint in the event that the sanding/scrapping of the actual concrete isn't feasable ? Thanks for the help

One method that works well is to rent a commercial buffing machine complete with a pad and sanding disks. I suggest using the course grit sanding disks.

If you have never used a commercial buffing machine before, start in the middle of the floor away from any obstructions and practice a little first without the sanding disks. You control the direction of the buffer by raising and lowering the handle.

After you have the feel for the machine and how to operate it place a pad and sanding disk under it and begin sanding the floor. Change disks as they become clogged or worn.

Clean up all the dust and dirt and etch the floor with a 5% solution of muratic acid and water. Rinse well and allow the floor to dry completely before repainting.

Would you recommend this for all concrete recoating applications? I am going to DIY the Rust-O-Leum garage floor epoxy. My floor is currently painted (poorly) with several areas of pitting. Is the floor buffer the best way to prep?

This method will work just as well for epoxy coatings.

Remove all the paint and then acid etch the floor using the muratic acid solution before you apply the epoxy.
