Did we get ripped off? (sealing driveway)

09/10/2007 02:11 PM MellyNel

We recently had our asphalt driveway resealed. The driveway was in bad shape. There were a few cracks in the driveway that small cracks around the base of the driveway close to the street. The guy who did it said they'd fill and repair the cracks. Well, they resealed the driveway and did a fine job, but you can still see the cracks. I was under the impression that sealing cracks on a driveway was like patching holes in your wall. You fill it w/ spackle and sand it down until it's smooth and you can't see the hole anymore.

Is it normal to still see the cracks? Thanks!

Hi MellyNel! Not sure I can really answer your question but I did wanna say "Hi!" It has been a loooong time; I recall enjoying our past discussions!

I guess I should ask if your driveway is concrete or asphalt but I will assume asphalt. There are people (unscrupulous & otherwise) that seal asphalt; I'm not sure it helps all that much (we used to have an asphalt driveway). Asphalt driveways need attention not all that different from what asphalt roads get, and eventually they do wear out and need replacement (we ended up doing that in our previous house).

So sealing cracks might delay some deterioriation - but in our case the damage had really been done - as snow & ice freezes and thaws do take their toll over time.

Anyway, I'm not on this iste all that often myself these days. We're doing a big remodel, and a whole bunch of other things. There don't seem to be all the old "buds" here - I think it's not quite the same as the old Plumber Tom days. But I do still get on maybe once a week or so and see what trouble people are getting into. And of course I cause enough trouble on my own! :-)

...OF COURSE you said "asphalt" driveway!, sorry! I can be scatterbrained (well, most of the time), and naturally, there are plenty of folks out there that will continuously remind me of that! :-)
