I want to build an island with two base cabinets. I want a 15 to 20 inch gap between the cabinets, creating a sort of bridge with the granite. Do I need any support underneath the granite where the gap is?

As long as the neighboring cab tops are in the same plane and you are using quality 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" top you'll be fine
