When installing a suspended ceiling and you have no choice but to run the gridwork up against existing ductwork, can you attach the edging directly to the ductwork using pop rivets? Or is there a better way?

I wouldn't do that....I would box out the duct work with 2x2 stips and then cover that in drywall.
