But that is 4.75 x 4.75. The way I calculate it, your ~5" long and 1-3/4" high louver has about 8.75 square inches of area whereas a 4.75 x 4.75 louver would have 22.5+ square inches of area. A considerable difference.

BTW. Did you notice the differences between recommended vent length for a 'big mouth' or louvered hood and the smaller mouth opening hood? Even that makes a sizable difference!

Probably so and if made of the best material possible (rigid metal ducting) with few or no elbows, all the better. You may however need to change it if you ever sell your house as I doubt it is up to building codes.
