E1 error on Kenmore Elite 110.62062100

Initial Symptoms:
My dryer showed the E1 error intermitently while running, but unplugging the unit for a few minutes got rid of the error. This was an acceptable workaround, but lately the temperature just hasn't been hot enough so the clothes don't dry.

What I did:
Thanks to the great advice I've read on this thread I figured this is likely the thermistor. According to the "repair parts list" (came with product manual), I know I need a 3976615, which I know how to order. But I decided to disassemble the unit first to make sure the service job was managable (yes, it is indeed very simple).

My current problem:
Upon taking off the lower front cover plate, I discovered a lot of lint! I also took off the Lint Duct Assembly and Blower Cover and wow there was more lint and the presence of fine white powder (like accumulated powder detergent paste). I vacuumed everything out (including the thermistor) and believe this may possibly fix my E1 problem without actually having to replace the thermistor.

My question:
I discovered that my periscoping vent had collapsed, thus restricting airflow. My gut tells me this is why there was lint everywhere. Can anyone confirm that lint should NOT normally accumulate inside the unit? I'm now also wondering if I should disassemble the blower wheel to clean out the housing, which still has a lot of the white powder that doesn't vacuum out because of the wheel obstruction. If I must do this, does anyone know how to remove this wheel? Are there other maintenance work that I should perform - like on the drum - knowing that I've had an exhaust issue for as long as a year?

I'll post my results once I have everything cleaned and re-assembled.

Thanks!
