Fireplace pipe

11/17/2006 09:45 AM cabinfever126

My husband wants to put in a barbeque pit on the back side of our fireplace.(This is new construction & backside of f.p.is in the kitchen) I can't locate in my area a fireplace pipe that comes in a 'Y' or even a 'T'. Years ago we saw this done in a magazine, that's were he got the ideal. Any help, any advice, pro or con, is greatly appreciated!! Helen Decker

advice

My advice is not to do this. It will be unpermitted and unsafe. Multiple appliance sharing of flues is not allowed - with good reason.

OK, what if we put in it's on vent-a-hood and tie it into the same pipe going out that the vent-a-hood on the kitchen stove uses?

probably still unpermitted and you would not be able to use both at the same time.

Think of the reasoning - each appliance uses/produces a certain amt of air flow exhaust. The appliance recommends a definite sized pipe because that is what it needs. But when you add another appliance to the same pipe, the exhause cannot all happen in the same space, so you end up with exhaust gases in the house, unless you open a window.

People do die from carbon monoxide every year because of ignoring these basic principles.

From my experience, it would generall be easier to run a new exhaust pipe than to make a tie in connection
