Are there floor sanders that can only use specific grits? I ask this because my contractor says that he cannot remove the swirl marks from my newly installed oak floor because his machine does not fit the smaller grit of 100 or 120. If this is the case then I will tell him to get the needed machine. But it just doesn't sound right to me. Please enlighten. Thanks!

Hi! I worked two years for a floor sanding/refinishing contractor and his machines could accept any grit, from 24 to the finest (I think it is 180 or 220 for floor sanding paper). He used a Clarke Super 7-R machine. But as the rubber pad on the machine wears, it tends to get round on the edge, thus making it more difficult, if not impossible, to do a good job along trim, door jambs, baseboards, etc, without leaving a gap where the sander can't go. The finer the grit he is using, the wider the gap will be. That is probably why he claims that his machines won't accept finer grits.
