Foundation Problem?

11/19/2002 12:08 PM Nammers

The back side of my house is brick and is on my neighbors proerty. She has told me that there is a seam in the brick that is supposed to allow for expansion and that all the houses in the neighborhood has this seam. But what is different about about is she says that when the A/C comes on, cool air is coming out of the seam. Could this be a sign of a foundation problem? If not what could be causing the cool air to escape?

Thanks,
Nammers

Foundation Problem?

Hi Nammers,

I think you ought to talk to a Brick Mason or a home inspector or someone like that. I'm no expert at this but you never know. It sounds 'hokey' to me. Post back and let us know what you find out. Maybe it has to do w/something in your neck of the woods.

My best to ya and hope this helps.

If your A/C ducts run thru that part of the bldg. ......I'd look for an opening in the duct work where you're losing cool air.......doug

I agree with Doug. If there is air coming through the crack when the HVAC unit is running, then the air inside that part of the house is being pressurized by airflow from that unit. If the control joint is all the way through the wall (I assume it is) it is the easiest path for the pressurized air to flow.

(Control joints can also be sealed with a good quality urethane caulking. The caulking will move to allow for the expasion and contraction of the brick.)
