** [Whirlpool gas dryer model] GGW9250PW0 **
That's better.
** But now it appears to be the thermal fuse. **
Have you actually checked it for being defective? There are lots of things that could cause a gas dryer to not heat besides the thermal fuse.
- How do I test for continuity?

** Is the fuse I gave my friend now damaged? **
I don't know. What did you/they do to it?? Did you check it for continuity to see if it was still good?
** the original thermister doesn't appear to have any damage ie burn marks. Would it be visibly damaged? **
No... other than possibly its terminals loose. Otherwise it could show no visible signs of problems and still be defective.
** are the thermal fuses (part # 3992519) the same for both? **
Yes.
** did I do more damage than good **
Using a different one would not cause any problems to the rest of the dryer just possibly the fuse not function as intended (ie. protect from fire). For a safety device like any "fuse", that would not be good. It would likely be a good idea to make sure the correct part was being installed beforehand.
