Garage to den conversion

05/15/2006 09:05 AM Dan23289

My current den is 12x24 ft with a 12x24 ft single car garage next to it seperated by a wall. There is no second floor above either room, only A frame rafters for the roof line. This den garage combination is on the end of a standard colonial design. I'd like to raise the garage floor to den level (vapar barrier, treated lumber, insulation, etc) and remove the wall. I can't imagine the wall to be load bearing with no second floor above. However, my plan is to support the ceiling beams with hangers from the A frames and place decorative support columns at the ends of the room. The ceiling beams are 12 ft long, supported at the center (between the two rooms) by the wall I'd like to remove. Will supporting this center beam from above be enough? Not being a structural engineer I'm looking for advice or cautions prior to removing a wall.
