Got started on the table project today

04/04/2008 09:30 PM paulcomi

I've been busy so it was only today when I was able to go down to Bohnhoff Lumber in Los Angeles and hand pick some genuine mahogany for the project-that's the name they refer to it here.

Got everything jointed, planed, cut to rough size and stickered up.

Hey Paul.......we're in the same place .......opposite coast.

Had somewhere to be this evening and when I got home walked through the shop and noticed Lynard Skynards.. "That Smell" of mahogany.

Looked around to see if the circus had been though. Don't you think mahogany has a gamey smell, sweet smelling cherry it's not. Forgot how nice it cuts though.

Yeah, I agree. Mahogany cuts well but it has a sort of dusty smell. It also creates quite a mess when cutting on the table saw. I was a bad boy and did all my rough milling without dust mask and when I took a sip of water, I had that taste in my mouth so I now see this is nice but sort of messy stuff.

I am in T Chisel's debt already. I've wanted to cross over and start making real furniture and it took this project to get me off my arse. Just going down and picking through the mahogany made me feel like I was a "real" woodworker ;-)

Its so ironic because I have all the stationary tools and did all the milling in about 2 hrs so who knows-this might just be the thing I needed to cut my teeth.

I see what you mean. So, for this project you'll document the build with podcast episodes and then back up the instructions in the My Projects/step by step? If so, that makes sense.

ps probably my issue alone, because on a pc/mac you can see the tree of replies to an original thread, but I get RSS on my bb.
