Help! I have mice

09/28/2003 10:16 PM micebgone

Okay, so I live in this house for 6 years and now... we have room mates. We know where they are coming in at, they dug a hole outside our house. How should I seal this up? We have been using glue traps since we have 2 young children and animals, but all I'm catching is fur and one tail. YES, a nasty tail. How gross. Please, I need your best advice... I'm ready to move.. How gross. I need to stay at a budget amount, we don't have any money.
Thank you so much for your help.

Help! I have mice

I've lived in my house 8 years and we'd had some mice every year--until maybe 2 or 3 years ago. Each year I "thought" I knew where they were getting in, and they continually found other avenues. I heard they could get in through a hole the size of a dime...so sealing holes is a good solution--but not as easy as it sounds. And you can move and have them at the new place, too.

You'll see other replies to the contrary, but I, personally, like the old-fangled "snap" traps. There is no poison around for kids and pets to get into. They don't crawl into the walls to die. "Kills" (or near-misses) are easily verified so you know if there's still a problem (hopefully not too many tails!).

Sheet metal is effective at closing holes. Steel wool can be placed in small holes, say in the crawl space; mice don't like it and won't dig through it.

Anyway I'm not totally convinced I'll never have mice again--but getting rid of them is a somewhat long-term proposition. Kind of like woodpeckers--you just try to do enough so that it's easier for them to go to the neighbor's house

Anyway, just start sealing the holes; hopefully you'll have fewer and fewer each year.

As for the traps, these are cheap; I reused them over and over but many people just toss them out when "occupied." (Use peanut butter and set them along the corners where you know they run).

Good luck micebgone!

Cats are the best mouse defense

They are really effective during the night. Say 2 AM, you hear thump thump thump thump, SQUEAK and when you turn on the light, theres your four legged furball with a mouse in her mouth!

If you get a mouser, make sure you get a female, the males could care less.
