We're getting ready to hang our Ikea frameless cabinets (melamine frames) about 4" below the ceiling. Unfortunately the ceiling is not flat and it slopes about 1/2" along the 8' 6" run of the upper cabinets. We want to put some sort of trim or molding above the cabinets to span the distance between the cabinet top and the ceiling. This will hide the range vent tube. Or at least we want to put a simple flat run of wood painted to match the cabinets to span the distance. The ceiling is a popcorn texture.

A few questions:

1.) Do we hang the cabinets first, and then scribe what the piece above will need to be? Or would we need to attach it to the cabinets before hanging?

2.) What is the best way to attach whatever we put above the cabinets? Screw through cabinet frame? Or attach the wood to the outside of cabinet with something like L-brackets? How would we hide the screws on the inside of the cabinet (white melamine) if we would screw through the inside.

3.) Would the procedure for the filler strip next to the wall be the same as what we do above the cabinet? We were thinking of using wood there too.

I have to do the same thing, because
the cabinet doors need to clear a exhaust fan fixture. Have you started the project yet? I am wondering if the filler board needs to come out only as far as the cabinet, or if it should be even with doors themselves, which adds even another question about how to attach it. I'll be watching your post to see what ideas you get.
