Humidifier w/ radiant heat

11/21/2007 08:57 AM tiggerbluemom

We have a combination of baseboard radiators and radiant floors to heat our new house. I have been looking into getting a console type humidifier, but wonder if it will work since our heating system does not circulate the air. Can anyone tell me if this will work, or do I need individual humidifiers for each bedroom? Thanks.

Humidity in air is water as a gas. It would be difficult to stop humidity from evening out inside a house just by closing doors, unless you lived in a house that made each room a sealed container.

As you have a radiant floor, you probably live in a new house. New houses are tightly built and insulated according to 1990 building standards. Most modern houses have difficulty getting rid of excess humidity, that is one reason Canadian provinces require air exchangers.

You haven't stated what relative humidity you want; but 40% is the most needed in warmer weather, and 25% the most wanted to prevent sweating windows in cold weather.

First determine if you need a humidifier at all; just because older houses were built more loosely and have ducts that leak moisture to the outside, doesn't mean that ALL houses need to improve a bad situation that doesn't exist in their house. A humidifier is used to solve a problem, it isn't a fashion statement to keep up with the Jones'.

Humidifier

Thanks for your help. Our house was actually built in 1955, the radiant floors were added in a remodel done 5 years ago by the previous owners. Don't have a measurement of current levels of humidity in house, but can feel how dry my own skin is and my three year old's blood noses let me know we need more humidity. Anyhow, sounds like onw console will take care of all bedrooms.
