I beg you help me with my window ?

12/30/2001 08:27 AM poorwindows

just bought a new condo that was converted from an old carpet mill. the windows in my rooms are a series of many windows that extend up to 15 ft high and are made of metal or alluminum. There is a horrible draft that comes from the 5inch metal area that divides each window. The builder says nothing can be done- I am getting a tremendous amount of draft- you can feel stron wind from 5 ft away- I am having custom made honeycomb shades for all rooms but I want to insulate them better first. What can I do or make the builder do?

feel free to email me as well
Thanks

Dear Poor,
The problem is not as bad as you would surmise. First ascertain where the drafts around the windows are coming from. If there is molding there remove it and get an appropriate amount of expanding foam, ( 50% expansion type) and fill the voids. If the draft is coming from the seal between the glass and the frame, there is a product called "Sillproof", obtainable at any commercial window outlet that is made just for your problem. Most people that buy old factories, etc. and convert them to loft space cut corners and let the tenants worry about the heat bills. If the place is very old, I'd consult a professional for advice.
Good Luck, Len
