Install replacement OTC microwave

12/27/2007 10:47 PM bsyldydiane

I need to replace my GE OTC microwave. Can I just pull out the unit, leaving the shell, and slide in the new unit? The vent is internal and the power is not hardwired, it is a plug. Can it really be so simple?

** OTC microwave. **

OTC?

"Over the counter" (non-vent type) or "Over the range" (OTR - combo micro/hood)??

** leaving the shell and slide in the new unit? **

OTR (over the range) microwaves do not slide into a "shell". The whole unit would usually have to be removed from the wall and cabinet mounting and a new one installed in its place.

Hopefully the original is not too old and is made by the same manufacturer as the replacement so both use the same mounting set up so it too doesn't need to be changed.

** Can it really be so simple? **

I really doubt it depending on the design of appliance in question.

** The vent is internal **

That should make it a little less difficult.

OTC Microwave

DanO,
Thank you so much for the information. I am replacing a GE that is only about 5 or 6 years old. Regardless, it doesn't sound like a "do it myself" project for me. Oh, my kingdom for a handyman!

No. It usually takes at least 2 persons.

If you replaced it with a model by the same manufacturer, there's a good chance the original mounting brackets should be able to be reused thereby simplifying the installation somewhat.

JFYI
