Installing Microhood Combination

02/17/2008 04:26 PM kstew46

We are installing a "Kenmore Elite 1.7 cu. ft. Microhood Combination" and are VERY pressed for space. When installed the microhood will only be 14" from the bottem of the cooktop.I do have the recommedned 30" from countertop to bottem of the cupboard. Sears tells me it is OK. I am afraid I will have trouble cooking and that it will look stupid. Can anyone HELP?? Thanks!

** I do have the recommended 30" from countertop to bottom of the cupboard. the microhood will only be 14" from the bottom of the cooktop. **

The minimum recommended distance between the cooktop and the bottom of a microwave hood for most OTR models is about 13.5" (30" mounting space minus 16.5" for the unit height) but check the installation instructions for your particular model.

BTW most range cooktops are ~36" from the floor.

** I am afraid I will have trouble cooking **

I might be more concerned with damage to the product from the heat generated while cooking if installed too low but accessing cookware might also be a bit more awkward too. The heat problem would be less likely a problem if the range is a glass top model. Mounting any lower over a gas range would almost certainly be a no-no.

** Sears tells me it is OK. **

If they're saying it is Ok to mount it lower than what the particular product's installation instructions state, I would suggest you get it *in writing* and check with a local building inspector. That way you should be covered should any problems result from the installation.
