We are buying new construction that is not custom-made, so requests for changes are diffult to achieve. When you walk in the front door, you see a column near the steps that take you upstairs. The railing that comes down the steps is continued at the floor level and meets the column. I really hate that railing section that sits on the floor between the steps and the column. When I asked the builder to remove that short section, I was told that it was needed as a support for the fiberglass column. If I have the builder remove the short section of railing, they said the column has to go, as well. Want the column; don't want the short section. If I have both pieces removed, can my husband and I put the column back after we move in, minus the short section of railing? It must be possible to anchor the column. The floor will be hardwood on top of concrete slab. Wondering if that makes it a problem. Of course, I am trying to get an answer as soon as possible. Thanks for any help you can give.

Good description I am still a little lost. My understanding about my experience with builders is that they are lazy or cheap. If you have asked for this and willing to pay for the change it should happen.

Ok I just had another read. Makes sense now. I seen no problem with this as far as structure. Well keep in mind I have not seen drawings. I am trying to think the benienft of why the builder did this. When able provide pictures.

If he can remove the column it is not part of structure.
