I moved into a house with attached 2 1/2 car garage last year and would like to use it for a workshop-car maintenace, but it is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. The walls are insulated and covered with drywall. The ceiling is totally open (including soffit vents and 2 air vents at top of roof). I would like to insulate beween the rafters if possible to keep my storage space up above. I know the vents are required and that I just cant cover them up. I dont know enough about insulating a roof to even start. Any help on what type of insulation and how the roof should be vented when doing it this way would be great. If it is not recomended to insulate directly at the roof, I will have to consider putting up a ceiling and insulating above. (I like my storage up there!)

Yes, insulate and drywall your ceiling. Remember though that the R-value is dependant on dead air space. After you rock, make sure that you tape all the joints. If air can get in there, you're R-value is wasted. If you don't plan to pull up the flooring space overhead, caulking the joints in the flooring would help.
