Is it true that the paper face on blueboard will only adhere to plaster if the board is new?

I heard from a guy that if the blueboard is not fresh, the blueboard facing can loose it's ability to stick to plaster.

If this is true, how long do I have? I want to be able to take my time on this project before I hire a plasterer to do a skim coat.
- thanks for any wisdom!
