KIrkland Signature Series Refrigerator

01/24/2008 11:39 AM CrabbyLady

I have a Whirlpool Kirkland Signature (COSTCO) MODEL SS25AFXLQ01 - Manufactured 04/03. We are having trouble with the ice maker. Whenever we make ice there is a puddle in the floor of the freezer which proceeds to freeze. The ice maker is making ice, but only a half the amount is should. 8 or so cubes should come out but only 3 or 4 come out. There are no obvious leaks coming from the unit that we can see in the freezer.
Is is possible that there is a connection behind the false wall of the freezer that is leaking?
This refrigerator is located on an island with access only by boat or airplane, so getting a technician out here is not easy. Any help would sure be appreciated.

Plugged drain hole?

You're certain those things occur together and it not just noticed at the same time?

Full size cubes??

Behind the rear freezer interior panel should be the refrigerator's evaporator (cooling) coil. It will periodically frost up and then be defrosted by the fridge's defrost system. The defrost water gets funnelled to outside the fridge through a drain system below the evaporator coil where it evaporates.

If that drain system is plugged the defrost water will pool in the bottom of the freezer compartment where it will freeze. A refrigerator will usually go into defrost every ~8-12 hours.

A defrost water drain problem will not affect functioning of the icemaker so any problems with it would have to be investigated separately.

JFYI

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. The problem was indeed two problems. There was a plugged drain hole and once we got that defrosted, the puddling problem was solved.
We took the filter out and the ice maker began working again. Needed a new filter.
Thanks for your help! A service call would have been mighty expensive!

Glad to hear it.

Yes both internal and external fridge water filters can cause problems with water dispensers and also icemakers. And there are so many different ones used these days (see the following link) even on the same brand of refrigerators. :/

Thanks for the follow up.
