Should the drain pump push water in surges or in a steady flow?

The pump is operational and the water is pushed out. Is this a sign that the pump is going to fail soon?

The drain water could surge as the amount of water remaining in the tub diminishes. It could also surge if the wash water was too sudsy in which case someone should look into the amount and type of detergent being used.

I don't know that a pump problem would act that way but might not be outside the realm of possibility.
