Our dryer stops working a few minutes after starting it. The problem started with automated programs, they would stop with error code E1 but timed dry used to work. Last month or so, they won't work either. It heats it but I think there is a problem with the sensor that it thinks clothes are dry and it just stops. Everytime this happened, we increased the heating level one up but now we are at high temp and that doesn't work, too. ***** wants $65 just to inspect it. I am trying to understand how much it would cost to repair it so that I can decide if I should buy their yearly maintenance plan $169 for a year. Any ideas are appreciated.

"E1" can indicate just an open thermister which should not be that expensive to repair but since you didn't post the machine's *model number* (from its model and serial number tag), we can't tell if that possibility is applicable to your particular Kenmore Elite dryer or not.

"E1" on that model dryer does indicate an open thermistor (solid state temperature sensor) which as you can see below is not that expensive of a part.

Error code is actually E1, not F1. If it was just a typo and it needs open thermistor to be changed, do you think I could do it myself? Are there manuals or instructions out there to replace it?

There is no service manual for that exact model of dryer AFAIK but there is one for Whirlpool's Duet dryer which is their equivalent of the Kenmore "HE3". That manual can be seen at the following link:

I have a Kenmore Elite dryer model number 110.72052100 and I am getting the E1 code, but not all the time, for this model number does this error code also mean I must replace the thermistor. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

Error and fault codes are not an absolute indicator of a part's failure but just a pointer to a *possible* cause.

While E1 on your model does indicate the control *thinks* there the thermistor circuit is open, the actual problem could be the thermistor, the wiring to it or in the thermistor sensing portion of the electronic control. The control has no way to know which is the case.

You could just replace it and hope for the best. They aren't that expensive and they are often the actual cause of such error messages rather then the other possibilities.

I just replaced my thermistor, thanks to your information.
It was very easy. I'm not that great with appliance repair, so if I can do it, anyone can. I had the help of a neighbor, and it made it a bit easier, but I think it could be done by one person pretty easily.
A couple of tips:
1. While there is no repair manual listed as available, when I took off the back panel and the top panel of the dryer, I found that there was a manual in a plastic holder on the inside of the dryer box! It had all the information you need to do this repair, and even gives test processes. Maybe I just got lucky, but it's worth the half hour to take off the back panel and top panel to check.
2. To get to the part, take off the front kick plate.
4. Once the kick plate is off, there is an oblong plate that has to be removed. It's right in front: the first thing you see.
5. Once you have that plate off, the thermistor and thermal fuse are right there. It's a little tight in there, and a small ratchet is needed to remove the screws easily.

I went ahead and replaced the thermal fuse while I was in there. I found the parts at my local ***** parts and service center. The thermistor was $18, and the thermal fuse $12.

This fixed the problems I was having (dryer would stop and display the E1 error code).

Most electronically controlled appliances will have a 'mini-manual' or 'tech sheet' with the appliance's wiring diagram. On dryers that is most often inside the console panel but it could also be stuck to the side of the cabinet inside the dryer or behind an access panel.

While not for that specific model, the repair manual at the following link covers most Whirlpool and Whirlpool built Kenmore dryers (with model numbers starting 110... except Duet and HE3 models) although the appliance's tech the sheet may still need to be consulted for model specific features. It should cover basic disassembly and common mechanical components.
