Because most modern frost free refrigerators rely on the fridge compartment temperature to queue the compressor to start running (to cool). If it doesn't warm up in that compartment as would normally be expected when in warm surroundings, the compressor will not run as much (or possibly at all) which in turn will prevent the freezer compartment from staying as cold as it should.
Household refrigerators and freezers may also have a problem with the compressor being able to start at all at very low ambient temperatures which could actually damage the compressor ($$$+). They are not recommended to be used in temperatures below about 50°F.
If you meed one that operates in temperatures below that, there are a couple of models specifically designed to operate properly in such temperatures (see the following link).
