My washing machine agitator is in two pieces. the bottom part agitates but the upper part just moves around with the clothes. Isn't it supposed to be agitating too? If so how do I fix?

It turns only every other stroke of the lower portion. If it spins freely, there may be a problem with the agitator 'dogs' (see the following link) or the mating cam and related parts (if used on whatever washer model you have).

Yes that model uses agitator dogs between the two halves of the agitator. If just the top section of the agitator is not moving properly, they might be worn out and/or there might be a problem with their mating cam (see the links below).

Thank you so much for giving me the directions on fixing my washing machine! I have replaced the dogs and have a bolt on order because mine was rusted along with a seal to keep water from getting down in and rusting my bolt again! It is a wonderful feeling to repair something yourself! Thanks again!
