My kitchen cabinets are 20 yrs old, they are not in bad condition just wear and tear over the years. I want to paint them to update my kitchen. I am thinking of an antique white. What should I use for cleaning first and also what type of sand paper. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Light purple would not be my first choice, but then I'm not a "decorator."

I would sand them with a fine sandpaper or better yet a sanding sponge. Then wipe them down with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and follow this with an amonia and water wash as this great at removing built grease and dirt that is common in a kitchen.

Then you will want to prime with a shellac based primer(Zinnser BIN) which has great adhesion and holds back staining from the wood. As far as the finish goes there is a new product on the market from Insl-x called Cabinet Kote that will be great as far as the finish paint goes.
