We are putting up tile in our kitchen backsplash. However we wish to make it unique. Does anyone know of any web sites I could visit for inspiration? |

Hi Bill, sorry, no I don't know of such a site, but definitely try some nice tile stores for inspiration. It's amazing to see their examples--the types of cuts they make, and the mixing that pros can do of different tiles. I did try and look at some web sites a few months back and was disappointed. For one thing, you miss the scale and heft of the real thing. Personally, I've gotten more inspiration out of magazines, books, etc. (I'd try your local library as the "most recent" really isn't important.) I'll bet your project turns out unique and beautiful. I've seen some bad/ugly tiling (mostly in our house before we bought it!) but if you pick some beautiful tile it's hard to go wrong....good luck! |

This is an old thread, but I'll comment anyway. God's green earth, underneath, is made of some beautiful stone. I think you can let your creativity flow by mixing different stones of different substance. Then mix polished and unpolished. Then mix different size tiles and different shapes and different orientations. Sure you can surf. You can go to the library. You can visit tile stores. All those may be inspiring. One additional idea is to talk to an installer about his ideas. Sometimes he may have "that thing I always wanted to do but haven't found the right spot yet." And professional interior designers are an excellent path also. Good luck. |

There are some wonderful books out currently on tile. Check out the library. You might want to do a search on art tile.
A great resource is www.homeportfolio.com As an interior designer, I send clients here as a starting point to gather ideas. They definitely have alot of the most current thinking and products on design.
Hope this helps! |

Mixing stones together is a pretty good idea, but it can really hurt your wallet.
I would suggest going with glass, or ceramic tile.
I recently discovered this really good website for kitchen backsplash designs and ideas:

Check out, it really helped me out |

Multicolored Slate is a stone where you can get one type of slate tile, such as Fantasia, and end up with thirty different colors in the various tiles you get in a box. This allows you to buy just one kind of stone, and still get a really unique look.
Also, mixing stones is fien but I wouldn't mix finishes, polished with clefted etc, as it could produce a muddled look
For natural stone including onyx, travertine, quartzite, marble, and slate tiles, and slabs visit http://pebblez.com/stone/index.html |

Custom stone kitchen backsplash |

One very cool option for a kitchen backsplash is hand-printed stone. You can create something personal, a focal point that is one of a kind.
One of the best sites is www.stoneimpressions.com. They have a big library of images, and can custom hand print your vacation photo or favorite image, or even add your name to a wine bottle. And for custom work, it is surprisingly affordable. Check it out. |

If you have a design you want made into a backsplash or floor, you can get it custom-made.
