kenmore washer 80 series won't drain

That is a Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washer design.

** it stops when it time to drain and spin. **

The lid switch will prevent the washer from spinning (where the drain usually also takes place), as a safety precaution. A failure of it is a common cause for your symptoms.

** I use to be able to start it back up by pressing down on the lid but that doesn't work anymore. **

That is further evidence of a likely lid switch problem, maybe its mounting has broken?
